How To Treat Psoriasis Scalp Conditions

Psoriasis scalp conditions can be especially difficult to deal with, and they can be hard for the suffer to overcome in other ways as the condition will be obviously visible to so many other people. The condition is caused by a speeding up of the rate at which the skin ages and is replaced by fresh skin.

Normally, this will take just under a month to happen, but it happens in this case far more quickly, the skin flakes away after only two or three days, leaving an unsightly appearance and possible irritation. When the affected area is the scalp, it is also perfectly possible to see temporary hair loss. Although psoriasis scalp treatment will often be localized to a degree, the best results will come when the entire body is treated as a whole. Although this is a disease of the skin, there is far more than just the skin which is affected. The major cause of all forms of psoriasis is a failure of the immune system to recognize the human skin as part of the body. Science cannot yet identify why this happens, but it is certain that a cure will not be found until the actual primary cause can be identified.

When the psoriasis on scalp is first noticed, the first step will be to have a proper diagnosis carried out. Many people have suffered unnecessarily because they took it for granted that a skin condition was one thing when it was really something else. There is no blood test which can conclusively identify psoriasis, but what you can do is diagnose it from looking at what is happening to the skin itself. A physician will usually be able to do this at your first meeting, but occasionally the case will need to be referred to a skin specialist so a more comprehensive diagnosis can be made.

If the psoriasis scalp appearance is confirmed as being accurate, the first essential will be to modify your lifestyle to avoid risk factors. If you have psoriasis on your scalp, it will be a good idea to have a short hairstyle so that the air can more easily get to the skin. If it is practical for you to shave your hair off completely, that will make it even better. Avoid going out into strong sunlight, as the top of the head is one of the most vulnerable areas. If you do have to go out, make sure that the top of your head is adequately covered.

Even though scalp psoriasis may appear to be on the outside of the skin, it will need to be treated both internally and externally. The first step is actually to make sure that your food intake is optimized, as dietary factors can be extremely aggravating. Smoking is the most aggravating factor of all, but if you have been a heavy smoker for a long time, it may be too much of an effort to quit all in one go. Whatever you have to do to quit will be worth the effort, so make sure you persevere.

When you are refining your diet for psoriasis, you will not find it that much different from the diet which would be prescribed to anyone who wanted to optimize their health. The usual suspects of heavy fats, sugars and refined starches need to be cut down to a minimum, while the intake of fresh fruit and vegetables needs to be increased. Many of these fresh foods also help the body to take in the vitamins and other vital nutrients it needs.

Vitamins can also be the first treatments applied externally in psoriasis scalp conditions. These creams and lotions have a soothing effect, and they can certainly help to take the edge off an attack when it happens. It is unlikely that these creams will be enough to manage the condition completely, unless it is an exceptionally mild case. If further treatments are needed, they will usually be drug based. The steroid drugs are the ones which have the quickest and most dramatic effect, although they do have a dangerous downside. If they are used for too long, the condition can actually reverse and become worse than before.

The problem with psoriasis scalp drug treatments is that they cannot be accurately targeted. Although it is the scalp where the symptoms show, and the immune system where the problems start, the drugs you will need to take for this condition will operate indiscriminately and will affect the whole of the body. There is a possibility that this can be overcome in the near future, as the new biologic drugs are able of target the immune system far more accurately. At the moment, the issue of price stops these drugs from being a common treatment for psoriasis scalp.
