How Psoriasis Arthritis Can Be Controlled

Psoriasis arthritis is a debilitating condition which combines joint stiffness with a flaky skin. It is an extremely unusual condition, in that it begins in the immune system, with the immune system actually thinking that the human skin is an invader. As of now, science is unsure as to exactly why this happens. The mechanism appears to be similar to that of food allergies, which are becoming increasingly common.

The immune system in that case perceives that harmless food items are actually a threat to the survival of the body. Although allergies remain puzzling, they do at least have the feature of being a reaction to something outside the body. The immune system is the immediate trigger for any of the types of psoriasis which can afflict the human skin. Arthritic psoriasis is relatively rare, with most cases being made up of the guttate psoriasis which afflicts young people recovering from a throat infection, and plaque psoriasis. This is the most common type, accounting for four out of every five cases. The most important task at the start is to make sure the diagnosis is carried out properly, as giving out the wrong treatment can set your cause back for many months.

All types of psoriasis can have very different degrees of severity, with some of the mild cases being difficult to distinguish from other skin conditions. Arthritic psoriasis is different, because the symptoms affect the joints as well as just the skin. There is no blood test which can conclusively confirm the existence of any type of psoriasis, but it can usually be identified readily enough by a qualified physician. In rare cases, the patient will need to be referred to a specialist for further analysis. In the case of arthritis, the physician will have more evidence to consider when making the formal diagnosis.

Once the diagnosis has been made, you can begin to work out a program of treatment. This will need to be substantially similar to the treatment which would be used for any other psoriasis condition, but there are important differences. Care of the physical body is the most important factor, as it is with any physical illness. It is unlikely that anyone with this condition will be carrying out the type of vigorous work which will put them at an increased risk of sustaining a skin injury, but if there are any factors which make this more likely they will need to be addressed.

Diet and lifestyle factors are critical with any type of psoriasis condition, but they assume even greater importance when arthritis is present. The effects of cigarette smoking, for example, will be magnified when there is already a pre-existing condition which the body is having to deal with. Smoking is the first health difficulty which will need to be dealt with if you are going to handle arthritic conditions properly. There are thousands of people who try to give up smoking every year and fail, but if you are having this difficulty hypnotherapy has a very high success rate and is worth trying.

Assuming that you do not smoke, and that you also have your alcohol drinking, sleeping hours and work schedule under control, you can begin to devise a diet to counter psoriasis arthritis. Start by analyzing your consumption of saturated fat, and of the trans fats which the body finds even more difficult to deal with. Cut down also on your consumption of refined sugar and salt, as these are not processed effectively by the body, and are therefore a source of problems to the joints. Try to base your diet around fresh natural food which is in season.

Psoriasis arthritis can be aggravated by a lack of the right nutrients in the diet, even when you are apparently eating healthily. Minerals in the soil can be depleted by over use and by the use of chemical fertilizers. Selenium is an important mineral for joint mobility, so if you suspect that it is in short supply in your diet consider using selenium supplements. Sometimes, eating a raw healthy diet and making sure that you have enough of the essential vitamins and minerals in your diet can be enough to allow you to live a normal life.

If your case of psoriasis arthritis does not respond well to this natural treatment, you will need to try to counter it with drug therapies. These are not something to rely on in isolation, as they will inevitably be prone to excessive side effects and be dangerous. If steroids are used, for example, they only have a short time during which they will improve the condition. After this, they will reverse and make it even worse. The modern biologic drugs are far safer for long term use, but as of now they are too expensive to be used regularly by many sufferers of psoriasis arthritis.
