Discover The Causes Of Psoriasis
Causes of psoriasis remain largely unknown, other than the obvious consideration that the disease is the result of a malfunctioning of the immune system. Exactly what triggers this malfunction cannot yet be determined. The process appears to act in a similar way to the way it operates with food allergies, in that the immune system perceives something which should be completely harmless as being a threat.
In the case of psoriasis, though, it is the actual skin of the body which is causing the inappropriate reaction. Although the cause is difficult to determine, there is no doubt that we know what aggravates the condition. The immune system of the human body is essential for its survival. Without it, the body would be overcome by viruses and other invaders, as it would have no way to fight back and protect itself. Despite this, there are times when it can do more harm than good, such as when it wrongly identifies something harmless as a threat. This is the immediate cause of psoriasis, although scientists are still not sure as to why the immune system reacts the way it does. More research is needed, and is ongoing.
It is not really possible to determine the immediate psoriasis causes by analyzing the frequency of the symptoms flaring up, as once the condition is established in the body it can be aggravated by a variety of triggers. Avoiding these triggers can lessen the extent of the difficulties you have with managing the symptoms, but you will still need to follow prescribed treatments. Some types of psoriasis, such as guttate psoriasis, can suddenly go into remission, or they can go the other way and transform into a more serious type of psoriasis. Looking after the body as a whole is vitally important.
Whatever the causes of psoriasis may be, there is no doubt that the condition needs to be managed effectively. Diagnosis is not possible by blood test, but a qualified physician will be able to see from the state of the skin whether or not psoriasis has developed. Occasionally, they will need to refer a patient to a skin specialist who can confirm the diagnosis. It is important to diagnose psoriasis as quickly as possible, as many of the initial treatments are very slow working. Dithranol, for example, can take up to six weeks before any effect is noticed.
Although we may not yet be able to determine what causes psoriasis, we can identify several triggers which can make the condition worse, or cause it to flare up if it has been in abeyance. The most obvious of these factors is an injury to the skin, so avoid any situation where this is likely to happen. If you play sport, it will be difficult for you to continue unless you are prepared to tolerate the increased risk of symptoms flaring up. Many of the other risk factors are the common ones associated with many medical conditions, such as smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.
Taking care of the body in the best way possible is the obvious first step when you are faced with a psoriasis condition. This does not need to happen all at once, if the body has been consistently mistreated. Indeed, there is a risk of reaction if too much is attempted too soon. If you have a smoking or alcohol problem, it will be necessary to deal with that first before trying to refine the rest of your diet. Taking in the right amounts of vitamins is the one change which should be made straight away, through supplements if necessary.
Many of these vitamins are used in a derivative form to treat the causes of psoriasis from the outside. Although these vitamins cannot cure the condition, they can certainly play a part in reducing the effects of it. If yours is only a mild condition, you may just want to stop there and not bring drug treatments in as well. These will obviously be prone to side effects, and some of them can be severe. A more extreme case of psoriasis will leave little choice, as the symptoms will interfere with your ability to live your daily life.
As the most extreme causes of psoriasis flaring up are both external and internal, it is obvious that soothing treatments will need to be the same. Try to lessen the frequency of attacks by following a healthy diet and lifestyle. If you have no smoking or alcohol problem, you can begin to eliminate other toxins from your body. Try to cut down on the amount of saturated fat and refined sugar that you consume, and try to increase your water rich fruit and vegetables. You can then gain the maximum benefit from any treatments which are applied externally to treat the causes of psoriasis.
